US Cellular Announces Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for All Android Devices

US Cellular Desire update is now here as of 2/8. More information http://nickescobedo.com/239/android-2-2-froyo-is-now-available-for-us-cellular-htc-desire.

Update: US Cellular has released Android 2.2 (Froyo) for the Acclaim. You can download the Samsung Acclaim update here! They have also pushed back the date for the Desire. Apparently they will have a specific release date for us in about 2 weeks. I will continue to update this post. The other Samsung phones are getting updates in March.

USCC Announces Froyo Update for Android Phones

Update: US Cellular has just updated their Facebook page with almost final release dates for their Android phones. The Samsung Acclaim will update next week, HTC Desire end of January, and the other two Samsung phones the Apex and Mesmerize will update in March. See above picture for official Facebook post

UPDATE: US Cellular has updated their Facebook page with the status above. Froyo or Android 2.2 release date is targeted to upgrade later this month, but may be pushed to January due to technical issues with HTC and Samsung.

Feels like a long time coming, US Cellular has finally announced the HTC Desire and Samsung Acclaim will “hopefully” receive Froyo in November. US Cellular seems to adapt more quickly to the market now that they have released Android phones. This is huge for US Cellular because they are always looked at as being slow to bring things to the market.

I’m interested to see how well 2.2 will run on the Acclaim. Hopefully it will smooth things out for the users that say the phone is slow!

Internet Scams and Helpful Videos

I recently stumbled upon an awesome website stophcommerce.com, which tells the story about a women who loses an extreme amount of money to scams. H Commerce stands for hacker commerce. StopHCommerce.com defines H Commerce as:

“To  make money from the illegal or exploitive use of technology to compromise consumer and business data. Originating from the practice of “hacking”, this global industry now generates more money than illegal drug trade and is cited by the U.S. government as one of the most significant threats to the country’s security and economy.”

People fall for scams so easily because scammers make everything seem real. This happens a lot while trying to sell things on the internet via websites such as Facebook and Craigslist. Also internet scammers can pay for collections of email lists, which they use to send their scheming emails.

Generally Scams consist of:

US Cellular Announces Release Date for Samsung Galaxy Tab

Samsung Galaxy Tab

US Cellular Announced on their Facebook page the release date for the Samsung Galaxy Tab as November 19th. US Cellular stores can start selling the tablets as soon as they arrive. Specifically on US Cellulars web page they state the shipments may arrive early. From past experiences they generally do. Contact your US Cellular rep to notify you. My guess is the tablets will arrive on the 17th or 18th.

Effective Non-Face-to-Face Group Projects Using Free Tools

skypeGroup projects can be effective even if meeting face-to-face isn’t an option using Join.me and Skype. Skype doesn’t allow screen sharing with more than 2 people at a time. Due to Skype’s limitation I needed another solution to share my screen with multiple people. I stumbled upon Join.me while reading my daily tech blogs. Join.me apparently allows up to 250 people to view your screen.

Join.me is an extremely simple tool to use, doesn’t even require an account. In order to get started visit Join.me, if you’re the host then click the button next to share. If you haven’t used Join.me previously you’ll be prompted to download a small program which allows you to share your screen. After launching the application it will give you a conference number to give to the group members. If you’re a group member wanting to join a session, simply visit Join.me and type the conference number your group member gave you and click button. Other neat features Join.me offers is people can request control of hosts computer and a text chat. Join.me doesn’t allow communication through voice, this is where Skype comes in. Below is the Join.me interface after launching the application.

Join.me

Due to Join.me limitation Join.me and Skype need to be used collectively. Skype is used for voice and Join.me is used to share the screen. It’s almost the same if you’re in person. I found this to be extremely effective if meeting face-to-face isn’t an option.

Best Buy Honors Accidental Damage From Handling Plan!

Coke on laptop

Best Buy honors their accidental protection plan.

Damaged Laptop

My old laptop (ASUS G1S) had soda spilled on it and wouldn’t turn on. I brought the damaged laptop to Best Buy and explained the catastrophe. The Geek Squad agent said it would be anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending on if the laptop was going to be replaced or repaired. If replaced about a week and repaired about 4 weeks. I noticed while checking the status online, Best Buy was waiting on me. The Geek Squad didn’t notify me I had to call them and ask them what exactly the status meant. He told me the laptop was eligible for an exchange. Once eligible for exchange you must work with a sales person to find a laptop.
